Of late I have stopped giving out advice on anything relating to PC’s, be it hardware or software due to people moaning “Oh this slows my PC down and it doesnt work etc”. Now dont get me wrong, If I am contacted privately via E-Mail and the person is willing to listen, I will do my best to help, but on the whole its becomie to much of a hastle offering free advice.
This is usually down to several things, the most common of which are :
1: The PC is out of date. (New PC’s arent expencive tbh)
2: The PC is full of unessicary software and has crap like “limewire” installed
3: A lack of knowledge from the user.
1 & 2 can be rectified but quite often people dont listen which leads me to 3 so heres a hint. Buy either Windows for dummies or PC’s for dummies – both are great books and explain most of what you need to know. if you cant be ARSED to even learn the basics DONT buy a PC.
Both PC and Windows for dummies can be found here :
What I am going to do now will probably contradict part of what I have written above. But this is aimed at those who have a bit of common sense and seeing as its nearly christmas I’ll prove im not always a miserable bugger by offering the following advice for free !
Firewall. Help prevent unsavoury charecters getting into your PC and having a snoop around. Comodo firewall is free and does the job perfectly
Virus Killer : Many people have theyre own opinions – so be it. Avast is fast it works well (if your PC isnt laden down with CRAP as mentioned before) and best of all its free, all you have to do is register it each year.
Spyware. This is usually due to visiting dodgy websites and downloading things for free that should really be paid for !!! For this I recommend spybot seek and destroy.
To properly uninstall a program use Rivo Uninstall.
DO NOT USE MICROSOFT WINDOWS OWN UN INSTALL.

Whats your opinion about the program “CCleaner” for uninstalling programs, changing startup programs, fixing registry issues, ETC?
CC cleaner is a very good program but I didnt post that as its a lot of functions in one program. I often get replys from people “Oh that program did something wrong” or “I dont know where to start”. Idea of the post was to offer some tools that are relatively straight forward to use and do one job each (and do it well)
I’ll put a link to it in the Links section
